Delving into our library of design books this week, we re-discovered a classic.

Something Old

What a little gem of a book! It takes the reader through illustrations and descriptions of furniture styles of the Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Regency and Victorian times. It also has a glossary of terms and even has an illustrated section on handes and backplates styles.

The design principles of this piece of furniture from 1896 were translated into a contemporary cosy corner in our recent cottage project.

Something New

This cosy corner in Dove Cottage, Harberton, utilises banquette seating. As you don't need room to walk behind the seating on one or more sides of the table, it enables a dining table to be fitted into a space that may be too crowded with a stand-alone set of table and chairs.

The seat is gently curved to work with the shape of the dining table. It also allows space for extra handy storage under the bench. We lime washed the wood for a soft finish that echos the rest of the room.
